GT Bikes: The Cult Manufacturer from California

The History of GT Bikes

The Beginnings

The history of GT Bikes began in 1972 in California, when founder Gary Turner (hence the name GT) developed his first BMX steel frames and manufactured them in his garage. His goal was to build durable and high-performance bicycles for the growing BMX sport. Together with Richard Long, he founded GT Bicycles in 1979, which quickly became one of the leading manufacturers of BMX frames.

The Path to Mountain Bike Innovator

In the 1980s, GT Bikes began focusing on the rapidly growing mountain bike scene. With the introduction of the first mountain bike "Karakoram" in 1988, GT successfully established itself in this area as well. Since then, the company has been known for its innovations and technologies that have significantly shaped the mountain bike sport and continue to do so.

GT Mountain Bikes

GT Full-Suspension Bikes

GT Bikes offers a selection of full-suspension mountain bikes for various applications, from trail to enduro to downhill. Some of the most well-known models are the Sensor, the Force, and the Fury.

GT Hardtails

For those who prefer something simpler and lighter and can do without rear suspension, GT also offers a selection of hardtail mountain bikes. Here, the Zaskar, the Aggressor, and the Avalanche are the most well-known models.

GT Gravel Bikes

GT Bikes is not only successful in rough terrain, but also on gravel surfaces. The Grade Gravel Bike practically founded this category in 2015. A model that continues to be one of the best in terms of comfort and riding enjoyment worldwide.

GT BMX Bikes

The roots of GT Bikes lie in BMX sports, and this is still evident in their range of BMX bikes today. From the beginner model Performer to the race-oriented Speed Series to the freestyle pro bike Street Performer, GT has the right bike for every BMX rider.

GT E-Bikes

GT is also active in the e-bike sector and offers both mountain bikes and gravel bikes with electric support. With models like the E-Pantera, E-Force, and E-Grade, there is something for every taste and purpose. GT relies on the latest drives from manufacturers Shimano (MTB) and Mahle (Gravel).

Technologies and Innovations

Triple Triangle Design

The Triple Triangle Design is one of the most famous trademarks of GT Bicycles. The seat stays are attached not directly to the seat tube but in front of it to the top tube. This creates a triangular structure that, depending on the processing and material used, provides increased stiffness (Zaskar) or a more comfortable ride (Grade through Floating Stays).

Independent Drivetrain

The Independent Drivetrain (formerly I-Drive) is a patented rear suspension technology from GT, used in many of their full-suspension bikes. The independent movement of the drivetrain and suspension is designed to achieve more efficient pedaling and improved suspension response.

GT Bikes Athletes and Competitive Successes

Over the years, GT Bikes has won numerous victories and titles in various disciplines of cycling. The GT Zaskar is the only mountain bike to have become a world champion in four disciplines: Cross Country, Trial, Dual Slalom, and Downhill! With athletes like Hans Rey, Brian Lopes, Eric Carter, and the Athertons, GT Bikes has an impressive track record in the mountain bike area. Currently, the focus is more on fun-oriented competition (GT = Good Times!) with athletes like Brage Vestavik and Wyn Masters.
